Darkan Primary School participates in the Crunch & Sip program, which is supported by the Government of Western Australia, Department of Health as a joint Australian, State and Territory Government initiative under the National Partnership Agreement on Preventative Health.
The Crunch & Sip program is an easy way for your children to stay healthy and happy whilst they are at our school.
Crunch & Sip is time during the day for your child to refuel by eating fruit or salad vegetables and drink water in the classroom. This re-fueling assists your children’s physical and mental performance and concentration in the classroom, just like putting petrol in a car.
Each day you are asked to provide your children with fruit or salad vegetables separate to their recess and lunch. Each child can have a drink bottle of water in the classroom to drink throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Classroom teachers will indicate to you and your child when Crunch & Sip will occur.
Through our participation in the Crunch & Sip program, we are demonstrating our commitment to nutrition education in our classrooms, by making links with the curriculum and creating a supportive school environment. The Crunch & Sip break gives your children the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit that might otherwise be left in their lunchbox or not be eaten at all.
Please send small cut up pieces of fruit and salad vegetables in a small container for your children, as whole fruit can be difficult to get through. No nuts, sweets, cakes or packaged food are accepted.
